Michael J. Beattie, DVM

Dr. Michael J. Beattie is a leading expert in aquatic veterinary medicine with over 25 years of experience spanning fish health, environmental toxicology, and aquaculture systems. He previously served as Chief Veterinarian for the Province of New Brunswick within the Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries.

Dr. Beattie played a foundational role in establishing one of the first active disease monitoring programs in aquaculture and contributed to pioneering research on pesticide dispersal and dilution in marine environments. His work earned him the Distinction Award from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from the Atlantic Veterinary College at the University of Prince Edward Island and is a Member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (UK). He also earned both BSc (Honours) and MSc degrees in Marine Biology from the University of New Brunswick, along with international trade and marketing certifications.

Dr. Beattie has co-developed and filed multiple patents related to the GIS technology platform. He also serves as an adjunct professor at UPEI’s Atlantic Veterinary College, where he has lectured and co-supervised graduate research. He was recognized as a Distinguished Alumnus by UPEI in 2017.
